Why WSIS Is About More Than Just Domain Names

Professor Geist’s regular Toronto Star Law Bytes column (Toronto Star version, HTML backup article, homepage version) examines recent developments involving the World Summit on the Information Society. The column argues that while the domain name systems captures most the attention, the tension between the developed and developing world at WSIS actually extends beyond the DNS to include the policy issues raised by technical management and the sense of lost control felt by many governments worldwide. The column concludes that although the instinctive reaction among many in the Internet community is to cringe at the prospect of greater U.N. involvement in Internet matters, the WSIS has highlighted several legitimate concerns that need to be addressed. also see: Task Force Backgrounder
