Cisco Study Says Canada Leading Source of Spam

Another day, another study showing Canada is a leading source of spam.  This time, it's a Cisco study that finds that on a per capita basis, Canada is single largest source of spam among the top 16 countries surveyed worldwide.  The study says that Canada is the fourth largest source in absolute terms, trailing only the United States, Turkey, and Russia.

  1. Stopping file sharing and cell phone unlocking and protecting Sony Rootkit TPMs seem to be higher priorities.

  2. Cisco did not do per capita analysis
here in the report does the –Cisco study that finds that on a per capita basis, Canada is single largest source of spam worldwide.–

I think that is your own colour commentary. Take the credit yourself.

  3. Cisco did not do per capita analysis — false claim?
The above comment is correct. Cisco did not do per capita analysis. They did the top 20 countries. They therefore do not provide enough data to support Geist’s claim of “per capita … largest source of spam worldwide”. At most, they support a claim of “per capita … largest source of spam among 20 countries”.

Of course, those with a basic technical understanding of how spam works are unlikely to rely on a “per capita” measurement. At the very least, you’d want to do it by Internet user. On which scale Canada is fifth-worst of the 20 countries.

  4. Not Surprised
Canada is a cybercrime haven because cyberspace is not a real place in the minds of politicians.

lets not forget cisco will benefit from a regulated internet. They are one of the many companies interested in being at the forefront so they can cash in

  6. per capita reference
I appreciate the comments regarding per capita. I cannot claim this as mine, however. The per capita reference comes from the CBC article referenced in the posting.

    Not true, Dr. G.
The CBC article did NOT say that Canada was the single largest worldwide on a per capita basis and they did not say the study found this.

The CBC article says *Canada … had the highest percentage of spam on a per-capita basis of the 16 top nations.*

It was you, Dr. G, who exaggerated by extending this to the entire world and who attributed the statistic to the Cisco study, not to another source.

    Strikeout on worldwide isn’t enough
Just striking out the word worldwide is not enough. Your headline is also wrong.

It is like pulling teeth to get you to acknowledge your mistake.
