Van Loan on ACTA

International Trade Minister Peter Van Loan's office has responded to NDP MP Charlie Angus' public letter on ACTA.  According to the Wire Report, Van Loan says that "ACTA would comply with Canadian law" and that "before acceding to any agreement, our government would need to be fully satisfied that it reflects the best interests of Canadians. The Government has been transparent in this process and will continue consulting stakeholders."

  1. “ACTA would comply with Canadian law”

A secretive attempt to poison public policy with industry lobbied international obligations is legal??

” The Government has been transparent in this process and will continue consulting stakeholders.”

This is insulting to say the least. Can anyone point me to a link on a Canadian Government website hosting all the ACTA documents?

“before acceding to any agreement, our government would need to be fully satisfied that it reflects the best interests of Canadians.”

How do you know what the best interest of Canadians are if 99% of Canadians dont even know what the agreement contains?

  2. “The Government has been transparent in this process and will continue consulting stakeholders”

You’ve got to be joking me. If this was true than all of us would have the access to the ACTA documents. The stakeholders in this negotiation are the Canadian public. We haven’t been consulted yet on ACTA, we don’t even know what’s been going on with the exception of leaked documents.

    @Jason
Ahh, you see Jason, it is an issue of semantics. You define “stakeholders” as the Canadian public. The government on the other hand defines “stakeholders” as a small list of multinational companies and their lobbyists.

Now that we have a better understanding of where we all stand, and what is in “the best interests of Canadians”, please bend over and pass the lube.

    Good boy.

  4. Actually ACTA has more to do with the US trying to build it’s next empire on IP, than to be in the best interests of multinational companies. We all know what happened when US lobbyists and multinational companies got involved with respect to the banking system. They collapsed. Anything that shuts out the public process and independent input is something that history has tough us, is not “in the best interests of Canadians”, nor in the best interest of our democratic ideals.

Van Loan’s roots are in the Netherlands. It would be interesting to see exactly where his family would be right now, if our democratic ideals were brushed aside during WW2. Van Loan has done a lot for his constituency, but I think needs to revisit the past with respect to the democratic ideals of the Conservative party. I think many Canadians at this point are looking back over the past few years, and questioning this as well.

I’ll pass the lube to Van Loan, from what I think will happen over this, he’ll need it. In fact I’ll buy him an extra few tubes ;P

  7. Transparent?
Transparent? Even his response is behind a pay wall.

  8. I don’t buy it!
I remember the Toronto music industry town hall, and bet that ACTA will comply with the interests of private corporations!

    Most distressing…
…to see that paywall in place re: something this important.

  10. The Pay Wall
The pay wall has nothing to do with the Government of Canada. The Wire Report, the publication that published the article, just happens to use a pay wall as its model of choice to produce revenue. There really isn’t a sinister conspiracy in this instance.

  11. Curtis Magyar says:

    Re: The Pay Wall
I think it is sinister that a pay site is the only place to get information about this interview. It may not be a conspiracy to avoid the news, but ACTA is a conspiracy by definition.
