The Security and Prosperity Partnership of North America, which brings together the leaders of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico, concluded this afternoon with a series of new agreements and strategies. Given the U.S. involvement, it should come as no surprise to find that an Intellectual Property Action Strategy forms a core part of the summit's final documentation. The document, which focuses on counterfeiting and piracy, includes three broad action items:

... It's interesting how this various 'councils' and 'partnerships' never say anything about giving the consumer what they want: DRM free product at a reasonable price. Their solution is to assume that every one is a pirate. |

... It is no wonder that the USA is so protective of IP these days. It has become their principle export. And as to point #3 "Measuring Piracy and Counterfeiting," which includes developing baseline data on these issues, highlighting the effects of IP in each country's economy, and facilitating the collection of counterfeiting and piracy data." I think it might be a good thing. Accurate, properly gathered, information is never a bad thing. Facts might actually help fight some of the FUD that gets thrown around |

... "highlighting the effects of IP in each country's economy" Obviously aggressive IP protection has economic benefits as it is good for the corporate bottom line. That's only one small aspect of society. Why not also "highlight" what effects imposing massive constraints on individual freedoms has on culture and democratic government (just as one example). Any chance our elected representatives will start doing their jobs and protect their citizens? |

... So.... I wish that this new website be in English, French and Spanish? :) |

Dramatic Development on SPP There was some protest at the SPP. Apparently, it was over whether this erodes our sovereignty. While I'm only familiar with the aspect you mentioned Geist, there was a bizarre clash between police and alleged provocateurs (which, police admit were really undercover police officers) The video was posted on YouTube and the CBC apparently briefly picked up on the story. You can see the original footage here: [ link ] |
