IIPA Lawyer: ACTA Would Help Bring Canada Into 21st Century

PDF  | Print |  E-mail
Tuesday January 12, 2010
Google hosted a debate on ACTA yesterday that included perspectives from all sides of the issue.  Rebecca Tushnet has posted a live blog of the event and Mike Masnick tweeted that Steve Metalitz, a lawyer with the IIPA, stated that ACTA would help bring Canada into the 21st century.  The comments are further confirmation that the U.S. copyright lobby views ACTA as a mechanism to limit Canadian flexibility on copyright by requiring DMCA-like provisions via treaty.

This just sickens me...
The more crap these lobbyists spew, the more I want them to cave in under their own greed.

I suggest we refuse entry into Canada for these American "copyright lobbyists", under reasons of national security and sanity.

I know what will bring Canada into 21st century - and it's not ACTA
Electoral reform towards proportional representation

Reforming the Senate so that these positions are elected, as are those in the House of Commons

Getting rid of the monarchy in Canada, because the monarchy is not answering to Canadians, but rather to someone who is thousands of kilometers away.

And many other things.

But the above won't be given to Canadians by the government, it looks like it must be TAKEN.

Ya it is bad.
One of the panellists in the debate flat ot says that Canada is going to have to take their copy right law into areas where it isn't yet. How about a debate, a REAL debate not a show debate about whether more draconian copy right law is actually good for Canada. There are credible reports out of the US that show that patent laws down there cost more than the value they create. There is also a very good case to be made that stronger IP laws stifle growth and don't promote it.
