Creative Protests Against the Canadian DMCA

What started with Gordon Duggan's exceptional 51st State comic released just before the introduction of Bill C-61 has expanded to other media.  Graphic artist Gaetan Diotte has created a series of graphics that can be used for posters or t-shirts.  Meanwhile, film maker Brett Gaylor's Copyright Criminals project is picking up steam with a growing number of participants.  More on participating in that project in the video below and at OpenSourceCinema.

  1. Youth votes
They said they wanted more youth votes, and it looks like they’re going to get them if this bill passes(which I don’t believe it will).

  2. Young and Old
Oh, they’ll definitely get a backlash of youth votes regardless of if this bill passes or not. The damage is already done. This government has finally given the lost souls a cause to vote against and stop being complacent. Whether this bill passes or not, the neo-cons have lost a lot of voters, FOR LIFE!

For all the 58,000 people on the facebook group, you can multiply those voters by at least 5 or six times for each one(given they’ve no doubt educated friends and family who probably don’t have internet or a facebook acct.) Those are guaranteed votes, who WILL absolutely show up next election to tell harper where to stick his fascist regime.

I’m pleased to see that MANY people who once mistakenly voted for these scum have seen the dangers and fatal error in their ways. It’s amazing how many workmates, and even conservative friends of mine have drawn the line and taken a strong stance against this type of government intrusion. Rather than be bitter against them all (as I have been in the past for their helping elect these control freaks) I’m happy to see that they’ve finally seen the light. Hell, even my conservative voting parents have pledged that they will never vote for this anti-freedom fighter ever again. Young and old, makes no difference. Canadians value their way of life and freedoms. You can’t put the genie back in the bottle, and this type of government is trying to do just that.

Additionally, we can only hope the Liberals do the right thing and vote against this. This is their best chance to win back voter confidence. Whilst I’ll never vote for the neo-cons, if the Liberals don’t take a stance on this issue, I’ll never forgive them. The NDP will get my vote for years to come. The choice is yours Liberals.

    Less creative: block bridges randomly
Less creative way to protest would be to randomly block bridges in major cities. This is used by Natives of Canada when they need to negotiate with the politicians and is known to work.

  4. Political tools
I recently read that Liberal MP Dan McTeague suggested that Canada should make it illegal to use the web to threaten MP’s with negative publicity. Harper filed suit against Dion for libel. Wikileaks has been sued by the Mormon church for copyright infringement. IANAL so I have to ask: Given this increasingly litigious mood, is there any possibility that the latest DMCA bill could be used to stifle political criticism/dissent/whistleblowing?

A recent comment suggested there would no longer be a need for high-speed internet access. I think this would make a great national protest!

I am a member of the Conservative Party. Probably not neo-con, just an honest hater of the Liberals. I am going to mail my card back, and tell them why. I am sure I will not be the first. Problem is, who else to support? Can’t stand the NDP-communist party, or the limp libs.

I’m in the same boat (well not a true member, but I did vote for them, and have for a long time). I don’t like the liberals, I’d be more inclined if some of them would take a stance on this, but I fear (for whatever reason) that they are just as willing to let this slide as the conservatives are. I’d vote NPD, but my MPP in the area is NDP, and he hasn’t even responded to anything I’ve sent to him. What am I left with, the green party? I really wish there were a few independants in the area…

Time for the Libertarian Party of Canada to step forward! So disillusioned with our current bunch of politicians, of all stripes… Time to clean house.
