Piercing the P2P Myths

Regular readers of my columns that appear in the Toronto Star and Ottawa Citizen will know that I featured a two-part series on the music industry late last year. I’ve updated those articles into a single work that has just been posted on First Monday, a peer-reviewed online journal

Piercing the P2P Myths: An Examination of the Canadian Experience looks at CRIA data from 1999 – 2004 and concludes that the claims of sales losses due to P2P are greatly exaggerated. Moreover, the article argues that the private copying levy does a good job of compensating Canadian artists for any sales declines that may have occured.

For those new to my work who may have arrived via Slashdot, Boing Boing or other blog postings, some of my more recent articles focus on Canada’s proposed plans for copyright (Copyright’s Convergence, Canada Rejects One-Sided Approach to Copyright Reform).
