Broadbent Institute: The TPP Free Trade Charade
I joined Ianik Marcil, Pia Eberhardt, Angella MacEwen at the Progress Summit moderated by Andrew Jackson to talk about the TPP Free Trade Agreement. I highlighted the mandated intellectual property rules and privacy rules in the agreement and how it could affect Canada’s own domestic laws.
CRDP UdeM: Droit/Law+Tech – Michael Geist – Now What?: Canadian Privacy and Surveillance Law
I spoke at the “Law + Tech – Current Issues in eHealth and Cybersurveillance” organized by the L.R. Wilson Chair at the Université de Montréal. I discussed the use of metadata, internet users’ data, and how the law should address its use in the post-Snowden era.
Canada and the TPP: My Talk on a Digital Policy Failure
Last week, I had the opportunity to deliver the keynote address at a Centre for International Governance Innovation (CIGI) panel on the TPP. My talk, which begins at 4:25 and runs until 41:00, focused on the digital policies within the massive agreement, including intellectual property, privacy, and Internet governance. Why Watching the Watchers Isn’t Enough: My Talk on Privacy, Snowden & Bill C-51
Last month, I had the honour of speaking at the Pathways to Privacy Symposium, a privacy event sponsored by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and hosted by the University of Ottawa. The event featured many excellent presentations (the full seven hours can be viewed here). My talk focused on the recent emphasis on the need to improve oversight, a common refrain in reaction to both the Snowden surveillance revelations and Bill C-51, the anti-terrorism bill. While better oversight is necessary, I argue that it is not sufficient to address the legal shortcomings found in both Canada’s surveillance legislation and Bill C-51.
